Leadership in Solar Energy

The State of Gujarat has huge potential of harnessing 10,000 MW of Solar Power if only 0.1% of land mass is set aside for the purpose. The Government of Gujarat realizing the importance of renewable energy in dealing with Global Warming took a bold initiative to announce the Solar Power Policy PDF file that opens in new window. Wind Energy

On the Wind energy front, the state has also embarked upon an ambitious plan to tap the large wind power potential. In 2013, the Government of Gujarat announced an amendment in the Wind Energy Policy External website that opens in a new window to tap the 35,000 MW of the Wind Power potential along the coastal areas.

The State with the 155 MW commissioned during 2014-15, has commissioned 3542 MW as of 2015. These Projects annually generate 25,613 million units of electricity, saving 47 million tonnes of coal and reducing the carbon emissions levels by 5.70 million tonnes.

Bio-Energy Power Generation

Non commercial sources of energy like cow dung, firewood, agricultural waste etc. are being utilized as a fuel through conventional mode mostly in rural areas which is neither energy efficient nor environment friendly. Also with the rapid urbanization and industrialization, a number of industries dealing with the raw material / producing large amount of waste material have come up in the past few years which increase the need of landfills. Such wide range of biological waste can be effectively utilized to generate energy. The energy produced from such bio-mass or organic waste is converted to electrical energy in power plant known as Bio-energy. The concept of using biological waste in power generation not only provides an energy alternative but also solves the problem of waste accumulation and pollution in landfills.

Three combustion based biomass projects of 10 MW capacities each are commissioned in Amreli, Junagadh and Bhavnagar. Gasification based biomass project of 1.2 MW capacity is commissioned in Vadodara.
